Enrolment & Transition

West Lothian Council makes provision for both denominational (Roman Catholic) and non-denominational primary school catchment areas.  Each home address has two catchment primary schools, parents may choose whichever of these Schools they wish regardless of faith or belief.

It should be noted that no guarantee of placement can be made although every effort is made to ensure that there are sufficient places available for children living within a catchment area to attend the catchment school. Where the number of applications exceeds the number of places available, it would be necessary to apply the “Placing in Schools – Guidelines” and refer all applications to the Special Sub-Committee on Pupil/Student Support. Nursery Class

The Pre-school Nursery Class caters for a maximum of 20 children in two separate morning and afternoon sessions subject to numbers and Pupil Placement decision to run these classes.

Children are accepted for Pre-school classes from 3 years of age to pre-school age. However, a waiting list normally is in operation and early enquiry is essential. Children are enrolled after their 2nd birthday.

There is a Nursery attached to East Calder, Pumpherston, Mid Calder and Kirknewton Primary Schools.

Children who attend St. Paul’s Nursery Class may later attend any of the Primary Schools in the associated catchment area. When a child is enrolled in the Nursery Class, this does not guarantee the child a place in St. Paul’s Primary One Class.

Enrolment into Primary One

Parents of district children will be able to enrol their child in school in November / December.  Children who are 5 years old between 1st March and 28th (29th) February of the following year are eligible to enter School in the August of the first year.   Applications can be handed in to the school office or sent directly to Pupil Placement at the Civic Centre.  At the time of application it is helpful to bring your child’s Birth Certificate and Baptismal Certificate (if relevant) to assist with School records.

The catchment area for St. Paul’s School is: East Calder, Mid Calder, Kirknewton, Pumpherston and Ratho. Parents of non-district children wishing their child to enrol at St. Paul’s should apply in writing to:

Parents of Non-District children should make an appointment to see the Head Teacher to discuss their child’s admission and to view the school.

Nursery to Primary One Transition

St. Paul’s has a comprehensive transition programme for Nursery to Primary One. Every opportunity is taken to familiarise our nursery pupils with life in the Primary school.   The nursery children have a bi weekly shared Golden Time with Primary 1 pupils. This allows them to continue friendships they have made in Nursery and also to become familiar with the Primary 1 classroom.  They attend assemblies, work with specialist teachers, undertake whole school activities such as enterprise, fund raising, eco-school activities and they quickly become familiar with school staff and the school building. Towards the summer term additional opportunities are planned when nursery children will spend time with their P1 teacher, will spend time in the playground and will meet the other children in their class. An induction meeting for new P1 parents takes place in June and then parent or carer of each child moving from Nursery to P1 has an opportunity to discuss next steps with the Nursery staff and the P1 teacher.   This allows us to meet the individual learning needs of each child. A buddy system is in place which allows older pupils to support their younger peers.

Any parent who is unable to take advantage of the above arrangements can make an appointment to visit the school individually. They should telephone 01506 881665 and speak to the School Administration Staff who will arrange a suitable appointment for them.

Pupils starting school in August will attend for the whole day from day one.
