Who Are Education Scotland?

Education Scotland Logo

Education Scotland has a key role to play in Scottish education, supporting innovation and dynamism throughout the education system, providing challenge and making a major contribution to raising standards overall. Education Scotland brings together the work of Learning and Teaching Scotland, Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Education (HMIe) and some functions currently carried out by Scottish Government. Until the creation of the new agency, HMIe was the executive agency with responsibility for evaluating the quality of pre-school, school and teacher education, plus community learning and development, further education and local authorities.

Inspections and reviews are central parts of the approach to quality improvement in Scottish education. To support improvement, inspectors focus on the quality of children and young people’s learning and achievement. There is a particular interest in the development of children and young people’s skills and understanding in literacy, numeracy, health and wellbeing which enables access to the highest possible learning within a broad, general education and beyond.
